About Students Coaching Students

Coaching is a valuable social skill that can enhance goal attainment and emotional regulation. Students Coaching Students offers a way to teach coaching skills to students, who are then able to support their peers to set goals and grow in a collaborative way.

This train-the-trainer course is designed to support educators who have already undertaken GCI coaching training to apply their knowledge and expertise to the development and implementation of student peer coaching in their school.

Based on the research of Prof. Christian van Nieuwerburgh and Chloe Tong (2013), when implemented thoughtfully, student peer coaching initiatives bring a range of benefits such as better study skills, increased emotional intelligence and improved communication skills, to both the students learning to be coaches and those students who are being coached.

Minimum Requirements

Participants must have completed the GCI Introduction to Leadership Coaching course or the Coaching Accreditation Program.

Structure
This course provides training for teachers to train their students to coach other students. The two-day program covers theories and elements of coaching, along with an orientation of the six modules that are taught to the students. There are a range of resources in the provided Teacher Kit to support you in the facilitation of the training, including a PowerPoint presentation, facilitator guide, GROWTH cards and an example of a student workbook.

Reviews

Matt Aukett
Associate Principal, Meadowbank Primary School (Formerly Associate Principal Auckland Normal Intermediate School)

"The Students as Peer Coaches Programme has been an absolute success and has allowed our students to increase their agency in learning allowing our students to be more confident and competent. The students’ increased ability to communicate their goals and aspirations made learning a more collaborative and inspiring process for both the students and the teachers involved."
