Coaching Skills for Students

This course is a three-part learning pathway designed to equip students with foundational coaching skills, develop student leaders as peer coaches, and provide optional ongoing support to ensure high-quality, ethical, and sustainable coaching practices within schools. The course is grounded in research and practice frameworks and can be implemented as part of schoolwide leadership, wellbeing, or peer-mentoring initiative.

The course also explicitly supports student voice, agency, and wellbeing by empowering students to lead reflective conversations, set meaningful goals, and build confidence in navigating challenges with peer and adult support.

About Coaching Skills for Students
Part One: Coaching Skills for Students

This one-day workshop introduces students to the core mindsets and skills of coaching, equipping them to engage in purposeful, reflective conversations. Students learn how coaching differs from advising or mentoring, and begin practising essential skills such as listening, questioning, and goal-focused dialogue. Through interactive activities and peer practice, they explore how coaching supports wellbeing, leadership, and student agency.

  • Introduction to the GROWTH conversation model
  • Peer practice and guided reflection
  • Links to wellbeing, goal setting, and student voice


Part Two: Becoming a Student Coach

This half-day workshop builds on foundational skills, preparing selected students to take on peer coaching roles with confidence and care. Students learn how to structure coaching conversations, establish clear agreements, and navigate ethical considerations such as confidentiality and boundaries. Practical coaching labs, including observation and feedback, support students to apply their skills in realistic scenarios.

Part Three: Ongoing Support (Optional)

This continuous approach strengthens both student wellbeing and program impact over time.
