Dr Julie Mathews

Julie is an accredited coach and a highly experienced and credentialed former educational leader and teacher. She has more than twenty years’ experience in leadership and management, including twelve years as a deputy principal in NSW schools (both primary and secondary) and eight years as a head of faculty in the tertiary sector. She is passionate about the benefits of coaching in the professional development of teachers and school leaders.

During her twenty years as a senior executive Julie has developed a deep understanding of national education systems and the needs of staff from pre-school to tertiary education. This experience has enabled her to guide, develop and deliver effective teaching programs to prepare teacher education students for the profession. She has also co-designed and delivered professional development programs (including Masters programs) for potential leaders and teams in a variety of schools across Australia and in the Sichuan province of China. Julie believes that coaching is a key to not only assist individual teachers and leaders in their career enhancement and promotion but also to develop highly effective teams in schools. When teams are equipped to function effectively together they are able to create and implement innovative programs designed to improve student learning outcomes.

In her doctoral studies Julie completed research and analysis of a mentoring program. Her thesis presented the benefits of mentoring for teacher education students in transitioning to the profession. This study has led her to further research into coaching/mentoring of early career teachers and potential school leaders aspiring to higher leadership positions.

Julie holds a EDD from University of Wollongong (NSW); an MA (Education) from Macquarie University (NSW); a BA, Dip Ed from University of Sydney (NSW)
